Emergency / Evacuation

Overview of emergencies, evacuation points, reporting and emergency numbers.

In case of a flood, fire or other emergency that has any potential to affect equipment or personnel, the following procedure should be followed.

  • Contact campus police (911 from a landline or 919-515-3000).
  • Pull the fire alarm if you think people in the building are in physical danger.
  • Evacuate the building and meet in the brick area by the MRC (above brick parking garage) or CTI parking deck.
  • Contact your supervisor with any questions on emergency procedures.
  • Report ALL incidents (even minor ones) to your supervisor within 24 hours.

Contact Campus Police at 911 from a landline or 919-515-3000. 

Shelter-in-Place

In emergency events, sheltering in place may be required.
Individuals may need to make the appropriate determination based on the circumstances. Additional safety training is available.

Shelter-in-Place means selecting a small, interior room with no or few windows. It could be due to chemical, biological and/or radiological contaminants released accidentally or intentionally into the environment.

If the alarm sounds, stay in the building and shelter in place.

  • Emergency communications will be sent out.
  • Wait for the official “all clear” from the university.

  • Building marshals make sure occupants evacuate to the designated locations.
  • Fire or building marshals will notify occupants at rally points when it’s safe to re-enter.

Active Threat

  • Shelter in place.
  • Emergency communications will be sent out.
  • Wait for “all clear”.

Weather Emergency

Tornados and Emergency Weather: Locations are on the first floor of the Textiles Complex. In the event of an emergency, know how to get out to the proper safe place quickly.  

Chemical Spill

Spills and Releases: When a chemical spill or release occurs, call 911 if it is an emergency or contact campus police in a non-emergency at 919-515-3000. Take quick action. 

Biohazard Spill: When a spill or release of potentially infectious materials has occurred, prompt response by trained personnel is needed. Call 911 if it is an emergency or contact campus police in a non-emergency at 919-515-3000.

Fire

Fire Emergency: If you see fire or smoke, pull the nearest fire alarm, shut the door and leave the building immediately. Call 911 and/or 919-515-3000.
